Under the President's pledge to "Formulate and implement a special policy to facilitate medical check-ups twice a year for every citizen under the Aasandha Scheme", coverage for medical check-up service through all government health service centers began on 1st January 2024. The program aims to facilitate early detection and early treatment of major diseases, instill a culture of improving health and staying healthy, and building a generation focused on disease prevention through lifestyle changes.

Our 'my aasandha' portal was launched on August 1st 2023. With this, citizens seeking government help for healthcare financing can submit online applications via the portal (https://my.aasandha.mv). And application status can also be checked at any time.

From 24th November 2022 onwards, all state funded medical treatment aid is being provided under one roof, as ‘VIRA’ service, through Aasandha Company Ltd in collaboration with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA). With this, citizens can avail the services of Aasandha (Aasandha & Meranaa Scheme) and medical welfare services provided under NSPA in one place. With this change, instead of submitting separate forms for Aasandha and Medical Welfare, the person in need of assistance will have to submit only one form. No additional form will be required unless the applicant's circumstances change. These services, which were previously provided from two separate offices, are now available in one place. The arrangement of submitting documents once, instead of multiple times, reduces the hassle of obtaining services and speeds up service delivery.

On 24th December 2021, at the event held to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Aasandha Company, a new feature where notifications are sent to the registered mobile phone when a service is obtained under Aasandha Scheme from a service provider using Aasandha's Vinavi portal, was introduced. The notification message contains details of the service received, the location, and details of the expenses.

Aasandha Mobile app named ‘Aasandha’ was launched on September 27th 2020. The app was first launched as an android app and in December 2020, the IOS version was also launched.

To provide financial assistance in healthcare to Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia, a health insurance scheme, named 'Meranaa' was introduced in April 2019.

Aasandha Company was assigned to manage Hulhumale Hospital on 3rd April 2016, under a new government initiative. With the expansion in scope, the company aims to contribute to the development of the Maldivian health sector by transforming Hulhumale Hospital to become a leading provider of specialist healthcare services. The company intends to collaborate and strengthen relations with both national and international stakeholders through the process. The management of the hospital will also provide the company a better perspective on health care service provision, contributing towards the management and administration of the Husnuvaa Aasandha schcme in a sustainable manner.

On 1st March 2015, the company became a 100% state owned company, as the Government bought the remaining shares with Allied Insurance Company.

In February 2014, the scheme was relaunched as Husnuvaa Aasandha - health insurance for all without a ceiling protection limit. Under the new scheme the MVR 100,000 cap per person was removed, and all Maldivian citizens now have access to unlimited health care for all medical services prescribed and recommended by medical doctors. Husnuvaa Aasandha scheme aims to provide medical care for all areas and specialties of medical requirements (subject to conditions and exclusions as per the scheme policy), both in Maldives and overseas (for those services unavailable in Maldives). The scheme covers all transportation costs of emergency cases, annual medical checkups for people over the age of 30 and for children under the age of 18 years, all medical costs associated with pregnancy, and treatment costs for people with special needs and terminally ill patients.

On 1 January 2012, the Government replaced “Madhana” (the national insurance scheme aimed at all civil servants, senior citizens and those living in poverty) with the universal health insurance scheme, “Aasandha”, with the aim of promoting affordable and accessible health care, with a broader coverage. “Aasandha” covered inpatient and outpatient treatments (subject to conditions and exclusions) with an overall cap of MVR 100,000 per head per year, including a cap of MVR 10,000 for outpatient services per person. All Maldivian citizens with a valid National Identification Card are eligible to obtain health services under this scheme without making any premium payments.

Aasandha Company Limited was incorporated as a joint venture company between the Government of Maldives and Allied Insurance Company of Maldives on 20th December 2011, tasked with the management of the national health insurance scheme (formally known as) “Aasandha”.
